Funny Deployment Stories: Anything That Can Go Wrong, Will

deploymentstoriesbutton1 You all may remember my Deployment Series in which a number of lovely ladies shared their deployment experiences and their tips to survive.  But deployments aren’t always all bad.  Sometimes there are some pretty funny things that happen and I’m happy to share with you a few stories that show the funny side of deployments.  If you have a funny deployment story you’d like to share, please email me!  I’d love to highlight your story!

This is a first for me to be featured on ‘A Boy and a Girl and the Marine Corps,’ and I would like to extend my appreciation for this opportunity.  I’m Cassidy, at ‘I’ll Follow You Anywhere.’  I’ve survived three deployments, several TDY’s and we have another challenge in the future that covered by OPSEC.
My husband and I bought a home in Texas before our second deployment.  Well, what can go wrong during a deployment, will go wrong.  There were things about this house I found out after he was gone.  You know, Skype is a blessing all in its own, but not when your husband is on the other end laughing at everything you do to save your home from mother natures wrath.
May is part of the horrible rainy season in Texas, and the way our back yard was sloped was toward the pool and toward the house.  Hmmmm.  Let’s top it off with, the drain on our back patio was clogged from all the debris of leaves, dirty and anything else flushed out of the gutter.  Ugh.  So, this one awesome evening when the rain decided to come down not only in buckets, but for more than 5 hours with flash flood warnings all over the TV I was on my hands and knees by our sliding glass door exiting to the patio.  Are you getting a visual?  Continuing.  I have a 5 gallon trash can on my right, and my dust pan in my hand scooping water from the patio, into the trash can, and emptying the water through the front door just to save my house from flooding from the outside in.  Chime in J [the husband deployed].
He skyped me through my iPhone which I had placed up where he could see the drama I was going through fighting mother nature.  I’m in tears, panicked, stressed and wishing he were home.  He stayed on for over an hour while I bailed out my home from the outside, in and outside again.  After I finished I sat there on the floor, soaked and exhausted.
J: ‘oh baby, you save our house from washing away.’
Me: ‘seriously, that’s what you’re going to say to me?’
J: ‘you’re my hero. better?’
Me: [sigh] ‘high-five babe. sure.’
The things we do to save our homes, while our guys save our lives.  This was probably my favorite ‘looking back moment,’ even if at the time I was pretty irritated with the current situation of lacking my husband in physical form.

A Little about the Author:
Born in ’82 you can guestimate my age. I’ve just recently said good-bye to my ‘partying naive 20s’ and hello to the ‘peak in  my sex drive 30s, with a thriving wine collection.’  I change my hair color almost every few years, and while being a blond for a while was fun I’ve reverted back to my natural deep auburn color.  I find it suits me better, even though my husband prefers me blond.  I was made an official Army Wife, March 2008′, and I’m far from a ‘glamorous’, military wife.
